BGM is the fourth studio album by Yellow Magic Orchestra, released on March 21, 1981. The title stands for "Background music", though Japanese TV and press advertising alternately used "Beautiful Grotesque Music". Produced by Haruomi Hosono the recording started on January 15, 1981.
This album was the first to feature the Roland TR-808 drumcomputer, which was at that time a Roland commercial faillure. The synthetic handclap used in rendition of Sakamoto's 1978 track 1000 Knives sparked sales.

BGM is as Rodney Dangerfield would say “gets no respect” and a long time ago I didn’t like it all that much. I have been relistening to after many years and it’s a flat out masterpiece. The only one that’s a little surprisingly off is Hosono’s “Rap Phenomena” yet I still like it, just doesn’t fit in the flow. -

Listening to this brought me to tears. The best-sounding record in my collection; they really went all out with the quality of these box sets, so much so, that I ordered all of the ones I could find. -

nice packaging and stellar pressing quality. lacks the entrancing mystery of the original japanese LP but if you prioritise detail, then this makes every last detail incredibly clear. not my favourite of the box set series but worth having if you're a YMO obsessive.

A flawless release. Coupled with stellar mastering and production, you'll be in heaven if you're a fan. YMO/BGM may not be for everyone, but it certainly is for this household! Don't hesitate, buy with confidence. -

Six stars for the excellence and grandeur of this masterpiece. My favourite all-time record which I would never have expected to become even more desirable before the box had been announced. This is the measure of all things in of electronic music production, and mind it's from 1981. -
